3 Tips to Get More People Online

Experts with learning disabilities at CHANGE think about what being online means and talk about how we can empower each other to gain more skills on the internet.
3 Tips to Get More People Online

Start with internet access

We don’t always have the choice of when we want to access the Internet.

“At the care home we are not allowed to have access to wifi”

“I can only check my Facebook when I go to the centre, which I do a few times a week.”

People assume we don’t want to go on the internet or the staff where we live want to know what we are doing all the time.

Develop skills

We want to be able to learn how to access and use the internet.

“I use the internet at the library as I do not have one at home. The staff at the library are helpful”

“I use the Internet to check my spelling”

“I use the internet on my iPad, laptop and mobile. I use the internet for everything like looking for guitar chords to play songs or YouTube.

“I would like more training on staying safe online.”

Provide peer to peer support

Peer to Peer support is a great way to empower people to learn from each other and gain skills.

“I have Level 1 and 2 in Information Technology Qualification.  So I can help my friends on computers if they need it.”

Message from CHANGE

We all have different experiences and skills online.

Encouragement, added accessibility functions and peer to peer training can help us get information online and make our own choices.

This will help us to gain more independence.

If you would like advice on how to  make your website or resources more accessible please get in touch
