Celebrating UK BSL Day

National BSL Day is celebrated every year on April 28th to mark the anniversary of the British Sign Language Act 2022. This day is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating British Sign Language (BSL), its rich history, and the vibrant Deaf community that uses it daily.

BSL is more than just a language; it's a culture and a way of life. It represents a call for greater accessibility and inclusion for the Deaf community. The British Sign Language Act 2022 was a significant milestone, acknowledging BSL as an official language and promoting its use in public services and institutions.

Literacy and the Deaf community

Research has shown that the Deaf community often have lower literacy levels than there counterparts (for many different reasons) and this can have a significant impact on their lives.

CHANGE: Making Information Accessible

At CHANGE, we are committed to creating easy read information that supports people for whom English is a second language. Our work ensures that everyone has access to vital information that is of a high quality, is accessible and inclusive. This aligns perfectly with the spirit of National BSL Day, as both initiatives strive for greater accessibility and inclusion.

By providing easy-read materials, CHANGE helps bridge the gap for non-native English speakers, making it easier to have autonomy and choice.

Looking Ahead

While National BSL Day is a time to celebrate progress, it also serves as a reminder that there is still much work to be done to achieve full equality and visibility for the Deaf community.
